THE RMRS Handbook Part Three: Health & Safety Policy

Whilst the Health and Safety at Work Act and associated regulations do not apply to THE RMRS as a voluntary organisation, the principles embodied within it have been adopted as set out below.

General Policy

The Society’s statement of general policy is:

  • To provide adequate control of the health and safety risks arising from the Society’s activities.

  • To consult with Members on matters affecting their health and safety.

  • To provide information, instruction, training and supervision for Members.

  • To review this policy at regular intervals and revise it as necessary.

The sections below set out how the above is to be achieved

Risk Assessment

THE RMRS’ Risk Assessment is the means by which health and safety risks are identified and assessed, and by which appropriate risk control measures are identified. These risk control measures are communicated to Members via THE RMRS Handbook.

The Risk Assessment must be reviewed at least annually to ensure it remains relevant and up to date.

Communication and Consultation

There is no requirement for formal Consultation with Members, however Members are encouraged to actively participate in THE RMRS’ health and safety regime as follows. Members should:

  • Familiarise themselves with the information provided in THE RMRS Handbook.

  • Provide feedback on the Society’s health and safety arrangements, in particular any potential improvements.

  • Cease any activity that they consider represents a health and safety risk.

  • Report any condition or activity that they consider potentially unsafe.

  • Where necessary report any concerns to the Society’s Health and Safety Representative.

Training and Competence

Certain activities (listed below) have been identified as having a higher risk than normal. Members must be supervised by experienced Members while they undergo training, until they are deemed suitably competent and experienced to carry out these tasks unsupervised. This applies to the following activities specifically:

  • Military drill, sword drill and weapons safety.

  • Assembling artillery.

  • Shooting or demonstrating artillery and archery.

  • Blacksmithing.

  • Tent erection and breaking down.

  • Weaving.

Training does not need to be provided by THE RMRS. For example, a new member who is a competent and experienced archer will not need further training. It is not necessary to record the training and experience of individual Members in writing.
